Halloween Update

As of last night, I have a coven of witches (3 to be exact) planning a Sunday night departure from my house. They are also trick-or-treating with their cousin in Martinsville on Saturday night (no, I don't really get this whole not trick-or-treating on Sunday thing either - but my girls have found a way to exploit it), but planning a whole different set of costumes for that night (based on dress-up clothes owned by them or their cousin).
---------- Stay tuned for late-breaking updates to the schedule ----------

Hooah!

Busy weekend:

Celebrated my Mom's birthday on Friday by having dinner with her and my sisters. It was good to see everyone and watch the girls interact with their cousin.

Headed to DC for the Army 10-miler with Joel & Chris. C drove and managed not to get lost - I was afraid we might end up in PA. We had sushi for lunch - J & I thought it was good (nice and spicy and cheap), it wasn't what C was expecting so he entered a saki-aided funk that lasted most of the afternoon. We picked up our packets, checked out the expo (no Tool) then waited for Sam (get a cell phone dude) for awhile before giving up and heading out to a movie. Went to see the Grudge - GREAT movie, you have to see it for yourself. Don't listen to anyone that says it sucks - they just didn't get it. If you have any movie sophistication at all, you will LOVE this movie. Great sound effects too, gurgle, gurgle, gurgle, gurgle, gurgle. Had a great pasta dinner at Portofino's to finish up the day.

Sunday was another great race day in DC - cold and damp! Actually, it wasn't bad running weather (until after the race, when there was a cold rain). The course was great, running by many of the DC landmarks. Our team ran well - I even managed a better than expected time. Definitely a race I would do again. Thankfully J drove home and we didn't end up in NC or WV.

Once back home I watched a movie (Spirit) with the girls (they watched, I slept). After dinner I gave Mattie a short haircut (Monday is picture day at school and she wanted her hair cut) and Grace a slight trim (though from the way she was acting you would have thought I had shaved her head - she wants long hair and doesn't quite get that it needs to be trimmed every now and then just to keep it even). Got them to bed and ironed their shirts for picture day (hey, once a year we break out the iron). I then tried, unsuccessfully, for several hours to get my new laptop to speak to the outside world (VERY FRUSTRATING). Went to bed to get some sleep before working out in the morning with Rex (who didn't show...even though I stuggled my way in at 7 despite only getting 4.5 hours of sleep)...

Girls, Girls, Girls

I've really had some great times with my daughters over the past few days! Grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, running (G&M are both able to run 1 mile and H does 2 blocks), dancing in Floyd, swinging in the backyard. Even routine chores can be fun when they are in the mood to be helpful. Don't get me wrong, it can be incredibly frustrating when you are trying to get them to do something they don't want to do - but the past few days they have been very co-operative with me. Hope it continues!!!

"Shower...

the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel. Things are going to be much better if you only will..." Cat Stevens (or whatever his name is) I think. Pretty sappy, but this song has been in my head a lot lately. Last week I left one company and this week a started with a new one - currently I have the same job. Well the people that I work with have really gone all out in showing me the way that they feel about me. I have been speechless - which for me is a big deal. I am very grateful for the great friendships that have begun over the past 7+ years. Hopefully I'll find ways to let all of the special people in my life know exactly how I feel about them. You should try it too, and don't wait for any special occasion - make the occasion special by letting them know how important they are to you. It's hard, especially for us guys, but it really can make a difference - it has for me!

Early Midlife Crisis?

I'm not sure what to call it, but I'm starting to enjoy watching sports. Before becoming a father, my spectator involvement consisted primarily of watching pro football on Sundays mainly as an excuse to nap the day away. Now I need the naps more but can't justify the time. Anyway, I recently went to a Va Tech football game and liked it so much that I'm going to another one this weekend. I've also found myself watching the playoff series between the Yankees and the Sox (I don't really care who wins - it has just been fun watching). And best of all, I love G&M's soccer games, cheering on their team and getting caught up in the excitement of their little league games.

I'll know I'm in full crisis mode when I start following NASCAR... (I would kinda like to go to a race, just for the experience)

At least I'm not only a spectator. Two years ago I was basically a couch potato. Now I run, bike, lift, play sports (ultimate frisbee, racquetball, dodgeball), even do yoga occasionally. I guess I shouldn't be too concerned about this latest change. What's the expression, "change or die", guess change is good. Sure beats the alternative :)

R&R

Good weekend. Got some much needed sleep! Friday night the kids and I watched the "School House Rocks" DVD (awesome edutainment - gotta love anything that explains, in song, the federal government using the analogy of a three ring circus) . They helped me with yardwork, grocery shopping, and dinner on Saturday. Sunday we went to church, a Latino festival and shopping for Halloween costumes. At this point I think we've got a vamp, a vampire, a vampiress, a tie-dyed witch and a bat dwelling in our house on the 31st. Of course, that roster is subject to change (as it has already about 3.43 million times).

Atlantic City

I was there this week for a conference. The conference went well and I had fun with a great group of people (just wish that I had gotten more sleep and that J had been there too). Here are a couple of thoughts on Atlantic City:

Casino's suck!
I am amazed at how much money people spend (face it, most people lose money) in such crappy places. No windows or clocks to let you know what time of day it is. No phone signal to allow you to connect to the outside world. Smoke clogged air. Watered-down, fishy tasting, drinks. Tacky decor. Desperate-looking people. And people complain about working in the bunker - at least we get paid, have clocks, and it is a smoke-free!!! Believe me, I have my vices, but gambling isn't one of them. Based on what I saw in Atlantic City, I don't think it will become one. Maybe Vegas is nicer...I hear that there is a group trip in the works (apparently bogged down in the planning stages for quite some time).

Running along the ocean rocks!
I had a great run on the boardwalk one afternoon. The boardwalk is a great, wide, wooden expanse - perfect for running. I headed north, and once I left the commercial area I could see the beach and the ocean as I ran. I really enjoy running around water for some reason (guess it's that whole astrology thing and being a Cancer) . The sound of the ocean crashing on the rocks and the waves hitting the beach was really awesome. Along the 7 mile run I only ran into three other runners though - total contrast to when I've run in California where there are always tons of other runners. Even in the 'noke I run into a lot more runners and bikers when I head out...

The Hokie Jungle

Friday night I stayed in b'burg to attend the Welcome to the Jungle party at Jilian's & Monica's. The Jungle Juice was definitely over-abundant and you had to watch out for the fruit that was in it (very powerful stuff). I'm not sure if we managed to finish half of the batch, but I had enough to be very glad that I had brought my sleeping bag and wasn't planning on driving anywhere. The visiting Abby was the perfect hostess, keeping everyone happy and the place tidy! In fact, I decided it might not be in my interest to become too good of a friend to J or M, since it seems their friends do a lot of their chores (mowing grass, cleaning house, manning the grill, etc.). The party was fun, great mix of people. It happened to end a little early though, so those that remained walked downtown to check out the pre-game nightlife.

We wanted to dance so we went to a place I had never been in before, Woody's. Scariest dance floor I've ever seen. As soon as any female hit the dance floor she had a couple of guys attached to her hips. Most of us headed out on their patio for some fresh air, then went over to one of the bar areas. Well Monica was working her charms all over the place, until she got embarassed by one of her students (he's hoping for a blackmail "A" but probably shouldn't count on it). After awhile, some of us headed over to Sharkeys looking for Rex (Joey?!?!) who had disappeared earlier. We partied with his friends until Sharkey's closed and then we headed back to the jungle. On the way, Monica pointed out a hill that she had always wanted to roll down. Well there's no time like the present (except for maybe sometime when the hill isn't soaked and the land below it isn't a swamp) so we rolled down the hill. I laughed so hard I almost peed in my pants - it has been a really long time since I laughed that hard. We got back to their place and cooked some bacon and hashbrowns, then watched a movie and crashed.

I awoke Saturday, thankful that I didn't have a hangover, since the football game was at noon and I had been looking forward to going to a game for awhile. It was the Va Tech vs WV game and it was the first Tech game I've been to in quite a few years. I walked to the game with Jilian and Abby (who was rockin' in her Hokie gear, face paint, etc. - we just need to get her some sneakers that aren't powder blue). Before the game I stopped by a few tailgates (a fraternity brother's, a co-workers, and my brothers') where there were incredible spreads of food. I met up with Joel (who had my ticket) and we went into the stadium. It was very impressive - last time I was there it was quite a bit smaller and less crowded. I'm not the biggest football fan in the world, but I really got into the game and the crowd. The noise is deafening in that place. Despite the deluge of rain (which was thankfully brief) I had a great time. I definitely hope to get to another game sometime soon. After the game I headed home and, suprisingly, didn't hit much traffic leaving b'burg.

All said, the Hokie Jungle was a great place to visit, but it is very good to be back with my bunny, monkey, frog and turtle at the zoo I call home.

The Joy of ...

Fatherhood. Okay, so parenting, as Dubya might say, is "hard work". But two recent events have reiterated the positive aspects for me:

Last Saturday I got to take the girls (all 3) to a skating party. It was fun having an excuse to go roller skating again and they all had a good time and did pretty well. We skated at the same rink that I used to skate at as a kid (I think they have the same carpeting around the rink) and it brought back so many memories. Skating in the disco era (anyone else remember Olivia Newton John in the movie Xanadu?) was such a blast!

This morning I let the missus sleep in and got the girls up and off to school. As an incentive to get them to move quickly, I told them we could have breakfast at Dunkin Donuts (sorry J) if they got ready in time. Well they set a record getting ready and we had plenty of time to enjoy some donuts and each other's company before the three of them went to school. It was a great daddy and daughters outing!

Here's hoping (praying!) for more of these good times and less of the stressful ones!!!
